Its worth bearing in mind that the F18 fighter jet that crashed in a San Diego suburb on Monday killing two adults and two children, incinerating two homes and damaging three others, is the same F/A18-D $57 Million dollar Hornet used by the Blue Angels for their awe-inspiring displays of aerial daring-do and military might during Fleet Week in the Bay Area and in similar displays across the country. The unfortunate potential for catastrophic death and destruction that accompanies these air shows is not something most in this country care to be reminded of. Yet, in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan (not to mention client states like Israel and Saudi Arabia to whom the US sells these war planes) reminders are posted daily. Barack Obama has already expressed his wish to redeploy troops, currently in Iraq, to focus more of the benefits of freedom on Afganistan. Perhaps the President-Elect and next Commander-in-Chief, who is eager to prove to one and all that he is not afraid to extend US military might around the world in order to shine our benevolence upon the heathen, will bear that terrifying potential in mind. But then, again, perhaps not. - Tom Lacey, San Francisco Peace and Freedom Party
