Fresno Peace & Freedom Party leader Gloria Hernandez is taking the lead in forming a new "Copwatch" organization in Fresno.
From 1998 to 2004, the Fresno Police Department averaged 3.85 police killings a year, more than six times the national average of 0.63 killings per year per 440,000 people (Fresno's population).
These killings are only the tip of the iceberg of the brutality and racism which characterizes Fresno police relations with the community. Hernandez hopes that knowing people have an eye on them will moderate some of this abusive behavior.
